Striper Report April 19,2010

by doug

The striper action is finally starting to heat up. Last week the action got quite a bit more consistent. The water temp is finally getting right which is around 70 degrees. We took fish last week mainly on the north end of Lanier flatlining bluebacks on main points in the major creeks. I am starting to see fish bunch up of the sonar. For awhile there we were not graphing anything on the sonar. It gives your confidence a boost when you know they are there (seeing them on the sonar). There were a good number of fish boated last week in the 20 pound range and a few reports of some 30′s being caught. The topwater action should kick in soon if the temps stay around the 70 degree mark. The best topwater action is usually on the overcast day’s so plan your topwater trips around overcast rainy day’s if you can. The best topwater baits are the old Redfin in the smoky joe pattern if you have overcast conditions and the chrome blue back if it’s sunny.

Bass fishing has been fantastic. While dragging live bait for the stripers, I have had my customers throwing small white ice flukes on 1/4 ounce lead heads and tearing up the spots.

Crappie action has been slow but a few fish are still being caught around super shallow  boat docks. I won’t be after the crappie now since striper action has picked up. I will be out all this week and will report back soon.
